Our president needs to take the lead now and clearly and unambiguously let the people of Iran know that we stand with them in their desire for a free and open election. Not only should our president make that stand, so should all of our members of the House of Representative and the Senate.

Freedom, liberty and self-determination are at the very foundation of our country and we need to support and proclaim it at every opportunity, especially when freedom-loving people are struggling to shake the yokes of tyranny. Not only is this the right course of action history clearly shows that societies that adopt free and open election are more likely to be a stable and positive force for peaceful international relations.

Watching an election being stolen by those in power runs contrary to all we hold dear.

As Washingtonians, we know how frustrated and disenfranchised voters can feel when they witness voting irregularities that defy all common sense.

It is time for the executive branch to let the disenfranchised in Iran know that we stand alongside them in their efforts to secure freedom, liberty and self-determination.
